The journal records an overland journey from St. Joseph, Missouri, to California in 1850. Letters, December 25, 1855, and January 31, 1856, describe the Yakima War, the campaign against Pu-Pu-Mox-Mox in the Walla Walla Valley, and Indian affairs in Oregon.
